Surprise guests?
Seriously folks - this is no laughing matter. Pirates vs. Klowns is a real deal throw down. If you need more details here they are..
DETAILS: On February 29, a diverse range of musical and visual artists band together for a party so crazy that it could only happen every four years; ?Pirates vs Klowns? ? the Leap Day Leap. Featuring a costumed crowd enjoying 6 hours of live music, performance art, circus and cabaret performance, and even some huge DJ sets. The centerpiece of this feast for the senses will be the first SF appearance of 2008 by the indescribable 43-piece music/performance-art/dance ensemble, The Mutaytor. Other highlights include a debut duo set by breakbeat stars Uberzone & Bassbin Twins and a visit from UK dubstep wiz Kromestar. Adrian & the Mysterious D. and Big Dolla will host the ?Bootie Pirate Mashup Room? in the front, while Antennae, Ripple & Boggle host ?Full Melt? dubstep and acid crunk upstairs. Motion Potion, Victor Vega, Absurge, and Rocket of the Fringe hold down the eclectic funk, breaks, electro and live art downstairs. LA?s legendary Cirque Berzerk will be on-hand to show off their high-flying aerials in the main room.
The Mutaytor is part hip-grinding techno-retro-funk, part audience-interactive post-modern circus. The act takes elements of Parliament-Funkadelic, the Crystal Method, Underworld, and Blue Man Group and throws them directly at the audience as riotous surreal entertainment. With tons of fresh material and an emphasis on instrumental prowess (with 2 guitars, keys and bass joining the huge drum-line), their sound is tight, the show manic, the vibe all-inclusively friendly. There’s nothing like a Mutaytor show; they are on stage, above the audience, IN the crowd. With their sonic redesign, recently showcased at their home in Black Rock City (punctuated by a burst courtesy of 2000 lbs of propane), it?s clear that The Mutaytor is a force to be reckoned with.
Uberzone is the brainchild of southern California native Q (named after the “gizmo” -loving James Bond character). Like his namesake, Q is a die-hard collector of all things electronic, and has been collecting electronic-music gear since his early teens. His early singles, “Botz” and “The Freaks”, were critically acclaimed club tracks that established Q as one of the leading American producers of breakbeat music. His remixes of Sarah McLachlan, The Crystal Method and BT also established him as one of the biggest names in the American dance scene. Spin Magazine named Uberzone as one of the six producers to create “the biggest beats ever.” Bassbin Twins were born in Los Angeles, moved to Belgium, and are now based in San Francisco. Started in 1992 simply because of a “love for the beats”, they’ve recorded for Skint, Belgian Breaks, Southern Fried, and others, as well as their own numerous one off indpendent releases. A live Bassbin Twins show is a remix of all their favorite music. Their innovative tunes range from breaks to house to drum ‘n bass. Anything and everything can get woven into the mix. Eclectic in nature, the connection lies in the unique rub they put on each track.
Adrian & the Mysterious D have spent the past 5 years as the West Coast?s leading champions of bootleg culture. Their wildly successful ?Bootie? parties rip up SF twice a month, and have also touched down in LA, New York, Paris and China. A member of the Mutaytor and a solo DJ of wide acclaim, Motion Potion is known for his infusion of funk, rock, latin and pop themes into organic and electronic breakbeats. An-Ten-Nae uses a similar approach, but drops his hooks into downtempo drop breaks and dubstep. The Fringe Arts Collective has spent the past 3 years aiming to ?bring culture to the counterculture? with live painting and music. Fringe DJs Big Dolla, Tim Dietz, Victor Vega and Absurge will be rocking the bassment.
DJ Ripple has been spinning records and producing electronic music since the early 90’s. He is a regular fixture in the Northern California underground party scene, and has become known for his unique vision & blending of the various underground styles. Dubstep, Breakstep, non-vocal Grime, and Glitched-Out Freakbeat get mashed together in his bassline fueled DJ sets. With a finely tuned ear and a finger on the pulse of the rave scene, his sets are guaranteed to bring about a full-on bass fueled rinse-out.
ARRRRR! HONK!

The Fringe Arts Collective and Sunset Promotions, the crews that undress tradition with their Freqo de Mayo, and Faux Years events will chase away winter’s wicked ways with some scorching breakbeats. UK breakbeat wizards Future Funk Squad and emerging Toronto phenom the Phat Conductor headline a night to melt the ice off the winter witch’s teats. Mighty will be converted into a winter wonderland, where parka-dressed peeps heat up the room and strip down to their bare minimums.

Future Funk Squad (AKA Glen Nicholls) started producing when he was just 15, initially writing songs of various styles influenced by the likes of ‘Depeche Mode’. In 1991 Glen was introduced to ambient and house music by his friend Mark Pritchard (Jedi Knights/Global Communication), this led to a few experiments with the club sound fusing his influences of the Prodigy, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, and many more. A few years later in 1997, Glen had his first release under the name ‘Instinct’ on top D’N'B label ‘Moving Shadow’. Throughout this time Glen had been experimenting with a manner of different styles of music including producing bands and solo artists. The Future Funk Squad was born in 1999 when Glen accidentally stumbled upon the ‘Nu-skool’ sound by making a d’n'b track too slow! This was released on a limited number of whites and was instantly picked up by the likes of DJ Hyper, Jody ‘Way Out West’, Tipper, Lee Burridge and many more. His debut remix of the Raze classic ‘Break 4 love’ put him firmly on the breaks map and is still played today by the likes of the Stanton Warriors & Terminal Head amongst others.35 remixes later including Moloko, SIA, Stanton Warriors, Koma+Bones, Mint Royale, Rob Dougan. Glen finds himself in constant demand and has become a respected name on the breakbeat scene, DJing all over the globe.
The Phat Conductor is one of Canada’s leading underground exports, holding it down since 1995 with gigs as far as Switzerland, the U.K, Burning Man, NY and the legendary Shambhala Music Festival in the rainforests on British Columbia. His diverse style covers all genres from Electro House, Techno, breakbeat, Hip-Hop, Dancehall, DnB & IDM/Glitch. No matter what the venue, The Phat Conductor can suit his style to the crowd and keep your dancefloor rocking. Throw loads of original tunes and the fact that he works with live video into the mix and you have a sure fire crowd pleaser.
Aaron Jae is one of San Francisco’s most consistent forces for underground break-beat culture as founder of Evil Breaks and membership in the Space Cowboys crew.
The Fringe Collective has been working for 3 years to “Bring some culture to the counterculture” fighting the elements to produce live music at Burning Man, and fighting convention to bring under-appreciated artists back to the limelight. Resident DJs include funk maven Motion Potion, electrophiles Victor Vega & Absurge, breaks & dubstep selector Mycho Cocoa, mashup-maniac Big Dolla, and breaks prodigy Tim Dietz. In addition to the DJs, the Fringe includes a score of live painters, visual artists and dancers.
